【本イベントについて/About The Exhibition】

人類は進化と共にあらゆるものを単純化し、よりシンプルで工数の少ないものを追求することで、現在の便利でスマートな社会を実現してきた。それと逆行するように“アート”は、時代背景の変化と共にその目的や意義を変えながら、様々なジャンルに派生し、細胞分裂の如くあらゆる表現方法が生み出され、複雑化している。“言語”においてはその動きはより激しい。毎年新しい単語が生み出されているだけではなく、元来の意味の範囲を超えて全く別の意味を内包する事も多々ある。その例として「カワイイ」という言葉にスポットを当ててみよう。一説によると11世紀頃から使われ出した言葉だが、当時は「恥ずかしい」という意味で使われていた。

それから「不憫」という意味を内包するようになり、16世紀頃から「小さくて愛らしい」という意味へと変化した。そして現在に至っては、大小問わず、老若男女や、色、デザイン、考え方など、全ての存在を対象として使われるようになり、もはや計り知れない範囲の意味を内包している。今回、そんな膨大に膨れ上がった言葉を、日々アートを用いてを紐解き、探求を続けているアーティスト6名の作品を集め、鑑賞することで、”カワイイ”の「核」を探ろうと考えた。

As humans have evolved, we have simplified everything, and by pursuing simpler and less manual labor, the present convenient and smart society has been established. Paradoxically, “art” has changed its purpose and significance with the evolution of the historical background, branching out into various genres, and becoming more and more complex with the creation of all kinds of methods of expression like a cell split.

The movement is even more intense when it comes to “language.” Not only new words are created every year, but they often have completely different meanings beyond their original range of meaning.

Let us highlight the word “kawaii” as an example. According to one theory, the word was first used around the 11th century, but at that time it meant “embarrassing”. Then it came to embrace the meaning of “pity,” which changed to “small and lovely” around the 16th century. And now, it has come to be used to refer to all beings, small or large, young or old, any gender, colors, designs, ideas… and no longer encompasses an immeasurable range of meanings.

In this exhibition, we will explore the “core” of “kawaii” by displaying the works of 6 artists who have been exploring and unraveling this vastly expanded vocabulary through the use of art.
